19th July 2020The LGBT Community which largely refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender have been on a long fighting war for many decades for their social and economic rights. It celebrates pride, sexuality, diversity and individuality of all kinds.
India alone has a transgender population of 4.8 million people and around 2.5 million gay people. Although this dates back to the times when Hinduism portrayed Homosexuality as natural and non-criminal.
It was clearly depicted through the sculptures of the iconic Khajurao Temple but the scenes were changed when the European colonisers put forward the Act of Section 377.
Unfortunately it was carried on for 70 years in independent India where there were several cases of harassment of the LGBT group.
2018 was a major breakthrough for the community as the Supreme Court of India removed the Act which criminalized all sexual acts "against the order of nature". The fight still goes on where there is much more to be achieved and the world has still to see so much of them.
India also has its first Transgender band called the ‘6 Pack Band’ which has its song going viral.
A Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio has become the first Transgender model to feature in Victoria Secrets magazine. Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs, India has asked Central Armed Police Forces for their views on recruiting transgender people in the forces.
Social Acceptance movements have also taken into large in the world, like the Pride Parade which celebrates all such communities.
This year saw a whole Pride Month reigning in full volume which was celebrated digitally and in 21 Indian cities.
We at Skillship support LGBT Community and pledge to take part and help in different ways. We aim to achieve a society where every individual has equal social and economic rights so that each and every person can walk the earth with integrity and pride without shying away from their true selves.
